The way forward isOpen

Open source software is freely available to use, lovingly made by people all over the world, and at the heart of DigitalOcean's business.

DigitalOcean: Powered by Open Source

In addition to open source powering many of our own libraries and frameworks, open source projects and the open source community embody values that we believe in and advocate for—innovation, collaboration, and optimism.

Why Open Source

Open source enables our business, and developers everywhere, to innovate and iterate quickly, which improves our products and helps our customers and community grow their big ideas more effectively.

Projects we use

DigitalOcean relies on open source technologies to do what we do. From our website that's built with Next.js to our core products, DigitalOcean proudly uses open source technologies like those below to run our business.

DigitalOcean offers grants of credits to open source projects to help with their development, infrastructure, and testing needs.

we want to give back to the open source ecosystem we
participate in and depend on

Grants are for credit towards DigitalOcean cloud computing services including virtual machines, cloud storage, managed databases, App Platform, and managed Kubernetes. Each grant is based on the individual needs of the project and which tier you apply for. Grants are awarded for one year. Applicants will need to re-apply each year if they want to renew their credit grant.

Any open source project with an OSI-approved license that meets our Grant Tier Criteria is eligible to apply.

Review the different types of OSI-approved licenses. If you haven't adopted one of these yet, you may not be quite ready for sponsorship. Consider researching your options. Here are two great resources for that: Understanding Open Source Software Licenses Guidance on Choosing a License

We will consider projects without a Code of Conduct however we highly encourage you to create one. Our friends at Indeed created this great resource on how to write your own: https://www.indeed.com/hire/c/info/write-a-code-of-conduct.

When will I be notified of the decision on my application? +

We review all applications and notify applicants of our decisions within 7-10 business days.

Yes. You will begin to receive email reminder notifications beginning 65 days prior to the expiry of your grant. You may submit a renewal request for credit sponsorship via the

No. All applications are subject to our review and approval process. You will be asked to fill out the Credits for Open Source Application each time you renew. If the project renewal is declined you will be informed before your grant runs out. It is helpful for us to understand why you need the renewal, and if you have new or different usage needs. You will be prompted to answer those questions when you fill out the Application.
